A Goofy Movie Dinner and a Movie Night: A Nostalgic Trip Down Memory Lane
Growing up, A Goofy Movie was one of those films that shaped my childhood. I can still remember watching it and totally sympathizing with Max, trying to figure out life while navigating that awkward relationship with his dad, Goofy. But now, as an adult, I watch the movie and feel so much for Goofy and his earnest attempts to connect with his son. The movie truly has layers that you can’t even fathom at a young age - and it’s a cult classic that will always stand the test of time. And let’s not forget, A Goofy Movie has one of the best Disney soundtracks of all time. You can bet your stars I was belting “Stand Out” and “I2I” the entire time I was preparing this A Goofy Movie Dinner and a Movie Night!
So, for this A Goofy Movie Dinner and a Movie, I wanted to create a meal that captures the heart and humor of the film. But it wasn’t an easy task! There’s so much inspiration to pull from, and tying it all together took some serious brainstorming. In the end, I went with Max’s smiley face bacon and eggs breakfast from their road trip, Goofy’s short stack pancakes as the main course and built the rest of the meal out from there. Where I landed on a leaning tower of cheezah (a tower of cheesy tater tots). And a "Hi Dad Soup" Mimosa (that I’m particularly proud of!) That I am particularly proud of to round out the night!
If you’re ready to recreate this nostalgic dinner, all the food recipes can be found in my Once Upon a Dinner and a Movie cookbook, which features 12 fully planned dinner and a movie nights with beautiful printable menus. And if you’re looking for a Disney-themed cocktail or mocktail to go with your meal, the "Hi Dad Soup" Mimosa is part of my Magical Mixology cookbook, featuring over 40 fun drink recipes!

Max’s Smiley Face Bacon and Eggs & Goofy’s Short Stack
One of the most memorable moments from A Goofy Movie is Max and Goofy’s road trip stop at the diner. Who could forget that scene where Max gets his smiley face breakfast of bacon and eggs? It’s such a simple yet iconic meal that really takes me back to childhood. For this A Goofy Movie dinner and a movie night, I recreated Max’s smiley face breakfast, complete with crispy bacon and perfectly cooked eggs arranged to look like a goofy smile.
But you know I I couldn’t stop there! I have a sweet tooth, so no hearty breakfast is complete without a sweet treat - so I had to add Goofy’s short stack of pancakes to complete the scene . Goofy is all about those classic, hearty meals, and nothing says a cozy breakfast for dinner quite like a good old stack of fluffy pancakes.
We love a good breakfast for dinner night, so this was hands down one of my favorite Dinner and a Movie nights yet!
The Leaning Tower of Cheetah (Tater Tots and Cheese)
One of the most iconic lines in A Goofy Movie comes from Max’s best friend, Bobby Zimmeruski, when he proudly shows off his “Leaning Tower of Cheeza.” It’s a moment that has stuck with me since the very first time I watched the movie, and it was the number one element I wanted to give a nod to with this meal. But instead of a tower of cheese puffs, I put my own spin on it and created a Leaning Tower of Cheeza Potatoes made from tater tots and cheese.
This dish was an absolute hit! But, in my personal opinion you just really cannot go wrong when it comes to potatoes. For this dish, I layered extra crispy tater tots into a leaning tower, with gooey melted cheese in between each layer. It’s fun, cheesy, and it just tied the whole A Goofy Movie Dinner and a Movie Night together perfectly.
In all honesty - my husband was a little shocked that I was SO excited about this meal. I mean don’t get me wrong, he loves a good breakfast for dinner - but he thought the meal was pretty standard compared to many of the over the top meals I have been over the years. But we sat down and rewatched that movie - and everything just made sense. This meal was so fun and nostalgic - it’ll make you feel like a kid again! .
Hi Dad Soup Mimosa
One of the most touching scenes in A Goofy Movie is when Goofy reminds Max of the time he gave him a bowl of “Hi Dad Soup” as a kid. Goofy recalls how the letters in the alphabet soup spelled out “Hi Dad,” and it’s a simple yet powerful memory that symbolizes the love and connection between Goofy and Max - Father & Son. I knew from the second that I planned to create this meal that I wanted to honor that scene - but figuring out how to tie it in to breakfast was no easy task. I literally wracked my brain for days, until I had an A-ha moment one day! Hi Dad Mimosa!
Now, getting the letters just right for this drink was no easy task. At first, the letters melted way too fast in the champagne, and the message would disappear before we even got a chance to enjoy it! After a couple of days of trial and error, I finally figured out that freezing the letters first - removing them from the mold, and then refreezing in a small puddle of orange juice would work perfect. The result? A bubbly mimosa with the “Hi Dad” message floating in the glass - it was perfect! Delicous and nostalgic!
My husband thought it was hilarious and couldn’t believe how much effort I put into getting this drink just right, but for me, it was a special nod to one of my favorite scenes in the movie - and I was so dang proud once it finally came to fruition!
If you want to add this playful touch to your movie night, the Hi Dad Soup Mimosa recipe is available in my Magical Mixology cookbook, which features over 40 Disney-inspired cocktails and mocktails.
