There's something truly magical about kicking off the holiday season with a Home Alone Dinner and a Movie night. For as long as I can remember, Home Alone has always been my go to movie to kick off the holiday season, so it definitely had to be the first Christmas Dinner and a Movie we did this season. This year, I decided to go all out, recreating some of the most iconic moments from the movie and indulging in my husband Matt’s favorite foods. From cheese pizza fit for Kevin McCallister himself to an epic ice cream sundae "junk board," this night was one for the books - and of course, I couldn't resist adding a little old school Home Alone flair to the decor.

Bringing Kevin’s Mischief to Life with Decor and Details

To set the perfect Home Alone vibe, I knew the details had to be just right. First up was Kevin’s battle plan. I downloaded a printable version from Etsy, framed it to hang in my kitchen. It’s the little things like this that bring the movie to life! Old-fashioned string lights were strung in my kitchen casting a vibrant, nostalgic glow, and adding just the right amount of mischief to the atmosphere.

I even the perfect found Little Nero’s Pizza Box I on Etsy.  I was a little nervous after ordering it, because you never know what you are going to get with etsy - but it was LEGIT. It was SO cool and made our dinner feel like a scene straight from the movie. If you’re planning your own Home Alone Dinner and Movie night, I can’t recommend this prop enough! And since we had just set up our first Christmas tree the day before, the room was full of holiday cheer, making the evening feel even more magical.

The Ultimate Home Alone Dinner and a Movie - Inspired Menu

No Home Alone dinner and a movie night would be complete without some seriously comforting eats, and this menu did not disappoint. For the appetizer, I kept it simple with a Little Nero’s Side Salad, a refreshing and light start to the indulgent carb loaded meal ahead. Then came the star of the show: our homemade cheese pizza, inspired by Kevin’s famous line, “A lovely cheese pizza, just for me.” I pulled out all the stops to make sure this pizza was restaurant-worthy, with a perfect balance of crispy crust, rich tomato sauce, and gooey, melted cheese.

Next up was the “Highly Nutritious” Mac & Cheese, a dish that I’ve spent years perfecting for Matt. I even served it with milk in a wine glass, just like Kevin, for an extra nod to the film. The mac and cheese was creamy, decadent, and everything you’d want on a cozy movie night.

To wash it all down, I mixed up The Sticky Bandit Spritz—a festive cranberry cocktail served from an ornament for a little extra holiday spirit.

And of course, we couldn’t skip dessert. I created an epic Ice Cream Sundae “Junk Board” loaded with all the fixings: cookies, sprinkles, candies, whipped cream, syrups, cherries—you name it! Inspired by Kevin’s iconic line, “Guys, I’m eating junk and watching rubbish,” this sundae bar was a the perfect night cap to our Home Alone Dinner and a Movie Night.

Hilarious Mishaps and Memorable Moments

As with any elaborate dinner and movie night, things didn’t go entirely as planned - especially when it came to timing. I completely mismanaged the evening and ended up making Matt wait until almost 9 PM to eat! We laughed it off, though, and the wait only made the food taste that much better. Watching Home Alone while enjoying all his favorite comfort foods made for a truly awesome night.

Matt, being the ultimate mac and cheese connoisseur, was particularly impressed with my “Highly Nutritious” *NOT*Microwavable Mac & Cheese. Years of perfecting this recipe finally paid off! And when it came time for dessert, the Ice Cream Sundae Junk Board was obviously a hit because you just can't go wrong with ice cream and all the fixings imaginable. We both loaded up our bowls joking -  “Guys, I’m eating junk and watching rubbish, you better come in and stop me” as we dug in. It was the kind of meal that makes you feel like a carefree kid again! I am so ready to dive into the holiday season after this awesome Home Alone Dinner and a Movie date night!

The Nostalgic Tradition of Home Alone

Every year, Home Alone is the first movie I watch to kick off the holiday season, and it never disappoints. There’s something about the humor and the nostalgia, that just hits different as an adult.  This movie takes me back to when I was a kid, marveling at Kevin’s clever antics and laughing out loud at the Wet Bandits’ misfortunes. Now, as an adult, it’s even more special to share that tradition with Matt, making new memories while indulging in our favorite comfort foods.

The magic of Home Alone lies in its ability to make you feel like a kid again, no matter your age. It’s a reminder of the wonder of the holidays, the warmth of home, and the joy of embracing a little mischief now and then. This Home Alone Dinner and a Movie brought all those feelings to life, making it the perfect way to welcome the holiday season.
