Is Ghostbusters and Halloween Movie?

As you know, we are counting down to Halloween with 10 Spooky Halloween Dinner and a Movie Nights! We are officially in week two of 10 -- and for this spooky date night, we are watching one of my husband's favorite movies - Ghostbusters!!

Before we get into the nitty gritty -- Let’s settle this once and for all – Is Ghostbusters a Halloween movie? For me, it’s a BIG resounding yes! Sure, it’s not packed with pumpkins, witches, or serial killers - but it’s got ghosts, and lots of them at that!!  I make sure to watch it every year during the spooky season, so I am calling it a Halloween Movie. It was especially fun giving it it's annual rewatch this year, because I was able to give in the Halloween Dinner and a Movie Night treatment!

I am having an absolute blast stepping out of my Disney bubble to create these absolutely awesome Halloween Dinner and a Movie Nights – I even took a big leap and finally showed my face on camera and invited you into our home this week! After years of staying behind the scenes, I figured it was time. Plus, with the new house, new kitchen, and all the spooky fun to share, it just felt right.  If you missed out on last week's Addams Family Date night - you can find it here!

How I Pulled Off the Ghostbusters Menu: My Two-Day Prep Process

Let’s be real, making an entire 3 course Halloween Dinner and a Movie and cocktail for date night can be A LOT – especially when you are trying to film every step of the process, and learn how to vlog. That’s why for this week's Ghostbusters night, I broke it up into two days, which was honestly the best thing I could have ever done for myself (and saved me from a major kitchen meltdown!). WHy didn’t I think about doing this years ago?

The day before our movie night, I knocked out the Slimer Jello Shots and the Stay Puft Marshmallowman Vanilla Cupcakes. These were easy to prep ahead of time and gave me a head start, so that I could actually enjoy the movie night with my husband the following day. For the jello shots, I went for a spooky vibe, serving them in syringes with a key lime pie flavor that was actually quite pretty dang good, albeit a little college girlie. I’m gonna let you in on a little secret here - it is 114 degrees in Surprise, AZ, and I just was not wanting to run my Oven 2 days in a row, so i bought a small pack of premade cupcakes from the grocery store - and decorated them at home. It cut out a ton of prep work, and these cupcakes turned out cute as heck.

On the morning of movie night, I tackled the Slimer Popcorn Balls. These caramel-coated popcorn balls were gooey, sweet, and drizzled with a neon green "slime" glaze. Once those were done, I had all day to focus on my glorious pie. I have made many themed berry pies, and pot pies for my husband over the years, and everytime he has a pot pie, he acts as if it’s the first time he’s ever had the most delicious, cozy meal.

For this Ghostbusters themed pot pie, I used some fun cookie cutters to make adorable little ghost shapes from the pie crust, and filled it with hearty vegetables and a rich homemade gravy. While that baked, I mixed up the Ectoplasm Punch, complete with dry ice and light-up coasters to bring the full spooky effect to life. The dry ice gave the cocktail that foggy, ghostly look and I thought it was perfect for the occasion.

Breaking it down like this made it easy to pull off the whole menu without stress, and. Maybe for the first time ever, I got to enjoy the movie night just as much as my husband did!

Bringing It All Together: The Perfect Movie Night Setup

With all the prep work done, it was time to bring the magic to life. Our living room was already decked out with our amazing home theater system. As soon as we turned on Ghostbusters, the room filled with spooky green and blue hues, transforming the space into a Ghostbusters Headquarters. It was the perfect backdrop for a night filled with delicious food, spooky vibes and lots of laughs and cuddles.

We first enjoyed a couple of Ectoplasm Punch Drinks. They looked ever so spooky with the dry ice fog swirling around it. I just love working with dry ice in my cocktails – they totally set the whole vibe off. And of course, the food was a hit. My husband couldn’t get enough of the I Ain’t Afraid of No Ghost Pot Pie—the flaky ghost-shaped crust on top and the rich veggie filling made it the perfect comfort food for a cozy night in.

All the spooky details really made this a night to remember, and getting everything prepped over two days allowed us to enjoy our Halloween Date Night evening without rushing around. We settled in with our plates, the lights dimmed, and had the best time laughing along with Ghostbusters—and yes, maybe quoting a few of our favorite lines! I won’t even tell you what my husbands favorite line is. LOL.
